Niti Aayog's strategy to make India self-sufficient in pulse production by 2030 and double production by 2047

Niti Aayog has unveiled an ambitious and comprehensive strategy aimed at making India self-sufficient in pulse production by 2030 and doubling the production by 2047. Currently producing 26.06 million tonnes (MT) of pulses, the roadmap projects an increase to 34.45 MT by 2030 and a further rise to 51.57 MT by 2047. This strategy not only targets meeting the domestic demand but also envisions creating a surplus to reduce the country's reliance on pulse imports significantly.

The approach involves several key interventions, including targeted crop-wise clustering, adoption of customized technologies adapted to diverse agro-ecological zones, and a strong emphasis on high-quality seed distribution. Niti Aayog’s plan includes establishing “One Block–One Seed Village” cluster-based cultivation models in 111 high-potential districts that contribute around 75% of national pulse output. These clusters, backed by Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), aim to enhance production efficiency and seed quality.

Climate-smart agricultural practices are a pivotal part of the strategy, addressing the challenges posed by climate change with proactive adaptation measures. The use of data-led transformation through advanced monitoring and decision-support systems is expected to optimize farming practices and resource utilization.

In addition to bolstering production, the report underscores the nutritional significance of pulses in combating malnutrition in India and stresses making pulses accessible and affordable to vulnerable populations through integration with public distribution systems and market interventions.

Overall, Niti Aayog’s roadmap outlines a clear path for India to achieve self-reliance in the pulses sector by 2030 and sustain growth to double production by 2047, thereby strengthening food security and positioning India as a leading player in the global pulses market.
