Gogoi Slams BJP Over Immigration Order, Says Assamese Bengalis Insulted

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led central government over the recently introduced Immigration and Foreigners (Exemption) Order, 2025, claiming that the move has insulted the Bengali community living in Assam and created fresh instability in the state.

Speaking to reporters, Gogoi alleged that the order paints Assamese Bengalis as “outsiders,” a portrayal he described as both humiliating and dangerous. “By introducing this order, the BJP government has made it appear as though the Bengali community in Assam are outsiders. This is unacceptable and deserves condemnation,” he said.

He further linked the measure to the political strategy of the ruling party ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. “Every time before polls in Bengal, the BJP plays such politics to secure Bengali Hindu votes there. But here in Assam, the same policy is twisted to portray the entire Bengali society as Bangladeshi,” Gogoi remarked.

According to the Congress MP, the divisive step has already triggered widespread resentment. He noted that during his visits to Hojai, Hailakandi and other Bengali-dominated regions, residents consistently voiced concerns over the government’s decision.

Gogoi also accused the BJP of acting against the historic Assam Accord, stating that his party would never compromise on the interests of Assam or its people. “While Congress has always respected the Assam Accord, the BJP has violated it for political gains. This cannot be accepted,” he asserted.

He reminded that senior Congress leaders, including Debabrata Saikia and former APCC president Ripun Bora, had already articulated the party’s stand in earlier press briefings, underscoring that the order undermines harmony in Assam. “The new immigration order particularly harms and insults the Bengali community of Assam,” Gogoi concluded.
