In a solemn tribute to the legendary musician, singer, actor, and filmmaker Zubeen Garg, the Assam government has declared 22 and 23 September 2025 as dry days across the state. This decision comes as part of the continuation of the extended state mourning period following the untimely demise of Zubeen Garg on 19 September in Singapore.
According to an official notification issued by the Assam Excise Department, all licensed liquor establishments, including IMFL, beer and country spirit manufactures, wholesale warehouses, retail shops, clubs, bars, and other licensed premises, will remain closed during the two-day period. No liquor will be sold or served in Assam on these days in respect of the late artist. The notification calls for strict adherence and requests all concerned to honor the memory of Zubeen Garg by fully complying with the order.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the update on social media, stating, “As a mark of respect to #BelovedZubeen and in line with the government's decision to extend state mourning till the 23rd September, Government of Assam has declared DRY DAYS across the state on the 22nd and 23rd.”
This gesture reflects Assam’s commitment to preserving the dignity and cultural legacy of Zubeen Garg, who was widely adored for his immense contributions to the state's music and film industry and had a beloved status across generations in the region.
The notification has been distributed to district commissioners, excise officers, autonomous councils, and other authorities for immediate enforcement to ensure the smooth observance of these dry days throughout Assam.
The state's collective mourning and respect for Zubeen Garg highlight the profound cultural impact he had and the void his passing has left in Assam’s artistic community.
