Guwahati, September 8: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has appealed to the Assam Government to introduce Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s immortal song “Manuhe Manuhor Babe” as a daily school prayer across the state. AASU President Utpal Sarma conveyed this demand through the Assam news portals, emphasizing that the timeless composition reflects the values of humanity, empathy, and unity that should be instilled in young minds from their earliest years.
Sarma said that Dr. Hazarika, revered as the “Bard of Brahmaputra,” gave the Assamese society a gift that transcends generations. “Manuhe Manuhor Babe” embodies the spirit of equality and compassion, which hold great relevance in today’s world. Making it a school prayer, he added, would strengthen not only the cultural identity of Assam but also nurture moral values among students.
He further noted that introducing the song in schools would be a fitting tribute to Dr. Hazarika’s contributions in his birth centenary year being celebrated worldwide. “Students should grow up learning the ethos of humanity before anything else. What better way than by beginning the school day with the soul-stirring message of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika?” Sarma remarked.
Educationalists and cultural organizations have also expressed support for the idea, highlighting that the proposal combines education with cultural preservation. They stressed that teaching values through music could make a lasting impression on students.
The Assam government is yet to respond to AASU’s suggestion, but the move has already sparked widespread discussion among teachers, academicians, and parents in the state.
