Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Assam to participate in the grand centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, where he released a special ₹100 commemorative coin dedicated to the legendary musician and cultural icon. The ceremony held in Guwahati marked Dr Hazarika’s 100th birth anniversary and witnessed attendance by top state dignitaries and large crowds, underscoring the enduring influence of “the Bard of the Brahmaputra”.
The commemorative event, hosted at the Veterinary College Playground in Khanapara, featured a stirring musical tribute with over 1,200 artists performing Dr Hazarika’s iconic compositions. Prime Minister Modi paid rich tribute to Dr Hazarika, praising his role in promoting national unity and the unique identity of Assam and the Northeast. Modi described Hazarika as a hero who gave voice to India’s dreams and aspirations through his timeless melodies.
The ₹100 coin, minted in Mumbai at the India Government Mint, carries Dr Hazarika’s portrait along with inscriptions in both Hindi and English noting the centenary and the year 2025. The reverse side features the Ashoka Pillar and denomination details. Weighing 40 grams and made of pure silver, the coin is non-circulating and intended as a collectible, with an estimated price between ₹7,600 and ₹8,000.
In addition to the coin, PM Modi also released a biography of Dr Hazarika authored by Anuradha Sarma Borpujari. The centenary event also included cultural programs, musical performances, and academic seminars focused on the maestro’s impact on Indian music and society. During his two-day visit, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several major development projects valued at over ₹18,000 crore, reaffirming the government’s commitment to Assam’s progress.
