NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognisance of Brutal Assault on Journalist in Lumding, Assam BJP MLA Sibu Misra Faces Allegations of Intimidation

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a serious incident involving the brutal assault of a journalist in Lumding, Assam. The journalist, Sujit Sarkar, also known as Hari Pada Sarkar, was viciously attacked by a group of nearly 20 individuals identified as goons linked to Lumding BJP MLA Sibu Misra. The attack occurred around midnight on September 7, 2025, while Sarkar was returning home after work near the Lumding Railway Institute.

According to the FIR lodged by Sarkar at the Lumding Police Station, the assailants assaulted him with wooden planks and iron rods, causing grievous injuries. They also looted his gold chain, mobile phone, watch, motorcycle, and press ID card. The attackers reportedly forcibly poured alcohol mixed with some tablets into his mouth. Police arrived at the scene promptly, rescued Sarkar, and took him to Lumding Civil Hospital for treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later advised to seek advanced medical care in Guwahati. The journalist has expressed great concern for his safety and urged authorities to register cases and pursue strict action against the culprits.

Following the assault, the NHRC issued a notice to the Director General of Police of Assam, demanding a detailed report within two weeks. The Commission emphasized that such an incident raises grave human rights concerns, particularly regarding the safety and freedom of the press. The Lumding Press Club and local citizens have strongly condemned the attack, demanding stringent measures to protect journalists in the region.

In a related development, after exposing the involvement of Lumding MLA Sibu Misra in sending goons to attack the journalist, the journalist has faced intimidation tactics. BJP MLA Sibu Misra allegedly tried to threaten the journalist by filing four separate police cases across different police stations in Lumding. Despite these threats, the journalist remains undeterred in reporting the truth and has highlighted that this is not an isolated incident, with several illicit activities linked to these goons.

The local BJP leaders have denied allegations against the MLA, claiming the accusations are part of a smear campaign by elements involved in illegal activities to defame the MLA, who is also active in anti-drug campaigns in the area.

This case has spotlighted the increasing dangers faced by journalists in Assam and underscores the urgent need for effective measures to ensure their safety and uphold press freedom in the region.
