CP Radhakrishnan Elected 15th Vice President of India, Marking a Significant Political Milestone

On September 9, 2025, CP Radhakrishnan, the candidate backed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), was elected as the 14th Vice President of India. He won the closely contested election by securing 452 votes out of 767 cast, defeating his rival B Sudershan Reddy from the INDIA opposition bloc, who received 300 votes. The election saw a high voter turnout of 98.2 percent, reflecting strong parliamentary engagement. Radhakrishnan's victory margin, while comfortable, was noted as one of the narrower ones in the history of Vice Presidential elections.

CP Radhakrishnan, aged 68, has a long-standing political career, including being a two-time Lok Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore. Known for his conciliatory approach in politics, he earned the moniker "Vajpayee of Coimbatore" for his ability to maintain friendly ties across political divides. Radhakrishnan has also served as the Governor of Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and held additional responsibilities as Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

His candidacy was supported unanimously by NDA members and several allied parties, reflecting broad political consensus within the ruling coalition. Radhakrishnan belongs to the Gounder-Kongu Vellalar OBC community, marking an important representation milestone.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Radhakrishnan on his election, expressing confidence that he would be an outstanding Vice President who would uphold constitutional values and enrich parliamentary discourse. Other leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, also congratulated him, emphasizing hopes that he will maintain the dignity and balance required by the Vice Presidential office, especially as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

The Vice President of India presides over the Upper House of Parliament and plays a key role in maintaining the decorum and constitutional functions of the Rajya Sabha. With his soft-spoken and inclusive demeanor, Radhakrishnan is expected to bring leadership that balances tradition with the evolving political landscape.

His election comes following the resignation of the former Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, and reflects the NDA’s strategic emphasis on experienced leadership from Tamil Nadu as the state heads toward crucial elections in the near future.

CP Radhakrishnan’s journey from grassroots activism within the RSS to becoming a prominent national leader underscores his deep roots in Indian politics and governance. His leadership as Vice President is anticipated to reflect his commitment to Indian nationalism and a vision of a developed and inclusive India.

This election not only confirms Radhakrishnan’s prominence but also signals the ruling coalition’s consolidated position in the national political arena. The event was a significant political moment, marking a new chapter in India's parliamentary leadership.
